A Taste of New York

While in New York for Fashion Week I had to partake in the diversity of the city. After doing makeup for the Zang Toi show and catching up on my sleep we headed out into the cold. Nestled in Harlem is an unforgettable restaurant. My husband Kelvin and I found Chocolat Restaurant Lounge on Frederick Douglas Boulevard. We were celebrating Valentine’s Day early and we wanted to find just the right spot.

The ambiance made me want to order a glass a wine and I don’t even drink. Kelvin and I just loved being at Chocolat. Our server was gracious and gave us impeccable service.

It was about  28 degrees outside so for dinner so I chose the shrimp and grits. I was looking for something that would be filling.  Kelvin went with the crab cakes for his entree. After my first bite I fell in love. This comfort food was filling and delicious.  The food was excellent and the conversation with Kelvin was the same.

For dessert Kelvin and I shared a chocolate molten lava cake! I asked for it to be warmed up. That cake did not have a chance at our table. We devoured it!

We both agreed that when we return to New York we will make our way to Chocolat.

Just before heading to the airport we also wanted to check out a restaurant we have heard about for years  – Syliva’s Soul Food on Lenox Avenue. I knew as soon as we sat down and they put the cornbread in front of me it was over.

I could tell by the multitude of pictures of legends such as the Temptations, The Clark Sisters, and Nelson Mandela I was in a very special place.

Making our way to catch our flight I quickly skimmed the menu and zeroed in on the smothered pork chops. I added greens, yams, mac and cheese and of course more cornbread. Living in Arizona I don’t really have many opportunities to eat like this.

Needless to say, Sylvia is now one of my favorite New York restaurants .

Here’s to good eating,
